Ensuring Compliance and Safety in Photovoltaic Inverters for the Brazilian Market

On this date, December 1, 2023, INMETRO Ordinance 515/2023 comes into effect, establishing the requirement of devices to protect against electrical arc interruption in photovoltaic inverters and microinverters (on-grids and off-grids) that will be commercialized in Brazil.

According to the new Ordinance, all on-grid inverters must indispensably feature a system for detection and interruption to safeguard against serial electrical arcs in the photovoltaic port(s). The method for interrupting the electrical arc must be integrated into the inverter.

For on-grid inverters with open-circuit voltage below 120 V and short-circuit current below 20 A, the functionality of arc interruption may be exempted in cases where the equipment's control technology ensures arc extinction under all operating conditions.

The deadline for inverter compliance is set at 12 months from today. Therefore, these new requirements will be mandatory starting from December 1, 2024.
